How to Make a Paper Animation from a Photo

Learn how to make a paper animation: prepare a photo cutout, add a paper edge and movement, then export a video or green-screen clip for your edit.

PAPER ANIMATION GUIDE

A paper animation makes a photo, illustration or word look like a moving piece of paper. A cut edge, a small shadow and a deliberate change in position can turn a flat image into a character or a visual beat in your video.

This guide uses Paper Animators, the free online paper animator. The cutout, crumple and text tools create different looks; choose the one that fits the shot you want to make.

A paper edge separates the subject from its background. Add movement in the cutout editor.

Choose the paper animation for your scene

A moving cutout works well when the subject should stay visible throughout a shot. A crumple reveal works when the arrival of the subject is the moment. Animated paper text works when the viewer needs to follow a word or headline.

Make a moving photo cutout

  1. Start with a clear subject

Choose a photo where the subject is easy to distinguish from its background. A transparent PNG you have already prepared gives you direct control over the silhouette. With an ordinary photo, use the editor's background-removal controls or the separate background remover. Inspect hair, fingers and small gaps before continuing.

  2. Add the paper treatment

Open Paper Cutout Sticker and add your image. Adjust the paper edge, shadow, subject size and position. Start with original photography if you want the face or product detail to stay natural; compare the printed and monochrome treatments for a more graphic result.

  3. Choose restrained movement

Try a gentle wiggle or slow rocking motion. Leave space around the subject so the paper edge stays inside the frame throughout the movement. Scrub the timeline to check the opening, middle and final frame. For a title or important face, allow enough time for the viewer to read or recognise it.

  4. Set the frame and export

Select 9:16 for a vertical edit, 16:9 for landscape or 1:1 for a square composition. Check the framing again after changing the format. Choose 720p or 1080p and a duration up to 60 seconds. Select Export video, keep the tab open, then select Download video when the button changes.

Put the animation over your footage

Use the green-screen background when you want to composite a moving cutout over a separate video. Import the exported clip into your editor, place it above your footage and remove the green with its chroma-key controls. Preview the edges against both bright and dark parts of your footage.

A transparent PNG is a still image. MP4 exports do not carry transparency in these tools. MP4 is offered when the browser supports H.264 encoding; WebM is the fallback.

Paper animation and physical stop motion

Physical paper stop motion is made by moving real cutouts between photographed frames. These browser tools create a digital paper look from your uploaded media and editable motion. They can supply a short cutout or title for an edit; they do not photograph physical objects or replace a full video-editing timeline.

Fix common cutout problems

The subject is cropped
Choose Full subject under Subject framing, reduce the subject size and check its position. Leave extra room for the paper border and movement, especially when switching from landscape to vertical.
The result looks soft
Start with a larger, sharper source and avoid enlarging a small image too far. A 1080p export cannot restore detail that was missing from the original photo. Review the downloaded file at its actual display size.
The edge looks wrong
Inspect the background-removal result first. Try Detailed edges for fine hair, or prepare a transparent PNG with the silhouette you want. A wide paper border cannot correct an inaccurate cutout.
Export takes too long
Try a shorter clip or 720p, close other demanding tabs and keep the editor open. Rendering happens on your device. Background removal may also need a model download on its first use.

Before using the clip in your video

Download the result before leaving the editor; there is no cloud project backup. Add your soundtrack and combine the clip with your footage in your usual editing app. The current tools are free, need no account and add no watermark. You can use exports in commercial projects when you have the necessary rights to the media you supply. Read Using your exports for details.
